Updated California Public Health Order and Guidance

Updated California Public Health Order and Guidance

As California announces its “re-opening” today, June 15, 2021, with its updated Public Health Order, it is important for ASCs to be familiar with the updated guidance from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).  In the latest guidance regarding face coverings, all healthcare facilities are required to continue with masking regardless of vaccination status.

On Wednesday June 9, 2021, the Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board held a special meeting to hear from the CDPH on their face covering guidance.  The board decided to withdraw the revisions to the Emergency Temporary Standards that were previously sent the first part of June to the Office of Administrative Law in order to update Cal/OSHA’s COVID-19 prevention requirement with the latest guidance.  The board posted new revisions on June 11, 2021 that incorporate the latest public health guidance.  The revisions will be considered at the board’s regular meeting on June 17, 2021.  In the meantime, the protections adopted in November of 2020 will remain in effect.

Navigating through this past year has required diligence to keep abreast of the changing guidance and standards.  Making sure your ASC is compliant with Cal/OSHA is complicated.  CASA is holding a pre-conference devoted to these OSHA challenges in September just prior to our annual meeting.  This is a great opportunity to assure your ASC is on track.

Pre-Conference - Cal/OSHA and Ambulatory Surgery Providers

The Pre-conference offering allows for more in-depth education into the important subject of Cal/OSHA and Ambulatory Surgery Providers.  2020 required ASCs to further evaluate the safety of their environment for the ASC patient and their staff. ASCs faced new challenges as they implemented respiratory protection plans, pandemic policies and confronted the effects of wildfires and prevalent smoke. As we move through the pandemic, providing a safe environment for employees and patients is of the utmost importance. ASCs have a responsibility to follow Cal/OSHA guidelines to protect health care workers from injury and illness in the workplace. This highly interactive seminar will review several timely Cal/OSHA topics and their applicability as well as operational methods of compliance that attendees can immediately implement. This 4 hour session will begin at 8:30 a.m. on September 8th, prior to the conference opening.  The Pre-Conference requires a separate registration fee and is not included with the general conference.

CASA Annual Conference

The conference kicks off on Wednesday, September 8th, at 3:00 p.m. Our Opening Speaker, Dr. Dave Logan, will speak to us on leadership principles pulling from his best-selling book "Tribal Leadership".  As we come out of this pandemic and the events of 2020, healthcare teams are exhausted and mental health is fragile. This session is a must as we address our work culture through Dr. Dave Logan’s “Tribal Leadership.” Every organization is a tribe or has a network of tribes that form naturally, in which everyone knows everyone else or at least knows of them. In this highly interactive session, Dr. Logan will show participants how to upgrade their organization one tribe at a time. The result is unprecedented impact, innovation, and success. At the heart of this session is the principals’ ten-year study on 24,000 people that mapped, for the first time, five stages of corporate culture and the unique leverage points to nudge a group forward. Dr. Logan will wrap up the session by leading a panel of diverse ASC representatives to further drill down on the challenges ASCs are experiencing and how the Tribal Leadership principles.

Building on Dr. Logan’s talk will be our keynote session Conquering Raiders of the Lost Spark -Your Spark Determines Your Success given by award winning author, Connie Merritt BSN, RN, PHN. A timely session for the exhausted healthcare worker.  Too often, a hectic schedule slowly extinguishes your special spark for accomplishing your purpose. This session will address time-management and corrections to help you manage the demands of work, home and community.

Our conference will continue with other key topics including, Improving Your Executive Process, Quality Improvement Hacks, Legislative and Regulatory Updates, and California Department of Public Health Updates on CMS surveys and the Medical Board of California and their ASC oversight.   In addition, there will be smaller breakout sessions diving deeper into the subjects of Finance, Human Resources, Clinical and Quality oversight.  Check out the full program here.
