Job Summary:

In this blended position, the Director of Nursing is a registered professional nurse who serves as the Director of the clinical team, ensures the center provides quality care through the performance of the clinical team, ensures patients experience excellent customer service from business office staff, maintains a safe environment for patients, manages all clinical staff, and prepares for accreditation.

Essential Job Functions:

• Supports and is committed to the mission and goals of the Greater Sacramento Surgery Center (GSSC).
• Works closely with the Director of Quality & Billing for QAPI-related matters.
• Oversee the Infection Control Preventionist/program under the direction of the QAPI Committee.
• Serves on the Medical Director Peer Review Committee.
• Serves on the Medical Executive Committee as a non-voting member.
• Oversee all clinical areas, including Operating Room and Pre-Op/PACU Managers, Charge Nurses and all patient care personnel.
• Work closely with HR manager and the Director of Quality & Billing to ensure patient care personnel are properly certified and abide by the standards for care established by the GSSC as well as state and federal laws.
• Develops and maintains policies, procedures and protocols regarding patient care, including central supply and housekeeping. This responsibility is accomplished with the assistance of the Operating Room, Pre-OP and PACU Managers and Charge Nurses.
• Will collaborate with the OR Manager and PACU Charge Nurses to recruit new hires.
• Oversees Environment of Care program/Safety Program.
• Develops and maintains current job descriptions for patient care personnel.
• Arrange for identified staff in-services when needed.
• Accountable for appropriate time management and utilization in the patient care areas.
• Responsible for staff development and motivation.
• Assists with patient care areas when need arises.
• Oversees staff meetings of patient care personnel.
• Collaborate with Managers, Sr. Director of Medical Operations and Medical Staff to ensure maximum utilization of operating room time, instrumentation and equipment, pre-operative and post-operative time, anesthesia services and adequate staffing for safe and efficient ambulatory patient care.
• Collaborates with the Sr. Director of Medical Operations to ensure patient care is delivered in a safe, cost-effective manner.
• Oversees personnel regarding equipment repair and scheduled periodic services.
• Reports to Sr. Director of Medical Operations at designated intervals, all related clinical, regulatory and operational information.

Other Functions:

• Enforces Company policies and safety procedures.
• Regularly updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining professional networks, and participating in professional organizations.
• Performs other duties within skill set as assigned.

Education, Licensure and Experience

• Must hold a current RN license from the California Board of Nursing.
• BLS required
• Minimum of 5 years nursing management experience, preferably in Surgical/Endoscopy environment.
• Minimum 5 years clinical management experience, preferably in a Surgical/ Endoscopy ASC.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in surgical/recovery nursing.

• Knowledge of State, Federal and Accrediting Body regulations and standards related to Ambulatory Surgery Centers.

SUMMARY

The Director of Nursing (DON) at Dougherty Laser Vision ASC is responsible for leading the delivery of nursing care across the facility’s clinical areas, including the Operating Room (OR), Pre-Operative (Pre-Op), and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). This role ensures safe, high-quality, and efficient care while providing leadership, oversight of staff, and continuous improvement of clinical operations. The DON collaborates closely with physicians, anesthesia providers, and administrators to uphold the center’s high standards of surgical excellence.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supervise all aspects of patient care in the OR, Pre-Op, and PACU to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate care.
• Hire, train, and evaluate clinical staff; lead onboarding, mentorship, and ongoing professional development efforts.
• Develop and maintain clinical workflows, policies, and procedures that align with the center’s mission, regulatory standards, and operational goals.
• Ensure compliance with internal policies, state and federal regulations, and other safety and quality mandates.
• Lead the center’s Quality Assurance Program, including quarterly meetings and monitoring key performance indicators.
• Partner with the administrative team to assess staffing needs, optimize scheduling, and allocate resources effectively.
• Facilitate open communication between surgeons, anesthesia providers, and clinical staff to maintain collaboration and efficiency.
• Monitor and evaluate patient satisfaction and feedback; implement improvements to enhance patient experience.
• Analyze clinical data and operational reports; prepare summaries and recommendations for leadership.
• Participate in strategic planning, contributing to short- and long-term goals related to clinical operations and quality outcomes.
• Oversee purchasing and inventory of surgical and pharmaceutical supplies as needed to support clinical functions.
• Maintain professional affiliations and remain informed of trends in surgical nursing and outpatient care delivery.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of nursing care.
• Responsible for operational oversight and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
• Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with company policies and applicable laws.
• This includes interviewing, hiring and training team members, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, and rewarding and disciplining team members.
• Addresses team member issues and concerns and facilitates conflict resolution.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the minimum knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience: 

• Completion of accredited Registered Nursing Program from a college or technical school.
• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
• Five years of nurse management experience and/or training required; OR/ICU experience preferred.
• Experience with ophthalmology or ASC of preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: 

• Current, valid Texas State Registered Nursing (RN) License required.
• Current BCLS required or must be obtained within the first 60 days of employment.
